Quite often I have met with an older patient who said, “So much for the Golden Years,” as they find themselves spending more time in doctors offices than enjoying their retirement.

Does it have to be this way?

I’ve met patients who thrived through their senior years. I’ve seen people who travel, garden, hike, downhill ski, and do yoga well into their 80’s. They are joyful and optimistic.

Is it all about luck? Good genes? Or is there more to it?

More than any other factor, a person’s health beliefs, may be the reason some people thrive into their senior years, while others struggle.

What do you believe? Do you feel unlucky? Do you believe disease and disability are inevitable as we get older? Or do you have plans for enjoying life for as long as you can? Are you determined to remain active and enjoy life? Or have you given up? Do you believe taking medications goes hand in hand with getting older? Or are you curious about how to thrive and remain medication free?

Most people want to be well and enjoy life but aren’t sure what to do. They may wonder if it’s too late and not worth the effort.

I’m an optimist. I prefer to believe anything is possible. How about you?

If you want to enjoy your life to the fullest, begin now. Improve your nutrition. Choose quality, whole foods, and ditch processed foods. Move more. Choose positive thoughts. Begin to meditate by sitting comfortably and focusing on your breath for 5 minutes. Be curious. Learn. Try new things. Find a friend to join you toward becoming healthier every day.
